Dholavira Travel Guide: Visiting the Harappan City in Kutch

Dholavira is one of the most remarkable archaeological sites in India — a planned Harappan city on an island in the Great Rann of Kutch. It is only about 31 km from Road to Heaven Resort, which makes it an easy and rewarding half-day trip.
Why Dholavira is special
Dholavira was one of the largest cities of the Harappan (Indus Valley) Civilisation. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021, recognised for its town planning and its sophisticated system for collecting and storing water in a dry landscape.
The site sits on Khadir Bet, an island of higher ground in the salt desert. Walking through it, you can still trace the outline of a city built thousands of years ago, with distinct areas, massive stone walls, gateways and wide open grounds.
What to see
- The citadel and gateways: the fortified heart of the city, built with carefully dressed stone.
- Reservoirs and water channels: the most impressive feature of Dholavira — large stone-cut reservoirs that show how residents managed scarce water.
- The ceremonial ground: a large open area believed to have been used for public gatherings.
- The site museum: run by the Archaeological Survey of India, it displays finds such as pottery, beads, seals and tools, and helps you make sense of the ruins.
- The fossil park: near Dholavira you can also visit a fossil park with ancient fossilised wood — a good add-on if you have time.
Practical tips
- Go early. The site is exposed with little shade. Morning visits are far more comfortable, especially outside winter.
- Allow 2–3 hours for the ruins and the museum. A local guide brings the city to life.
- Carry water, a hat and sunscreen, and wear good walking shoes.
- Check timings and tickets with the Archaeological Survey of India before you go, as these can change.
Best time to visit
October to March is ideal, with cooler temperatures and the White Rann at its best. It is the perfect time to combine Dholavira with the Road to Heaven, Kala Dungar and Rann Utsav.
Getting there and where to stay
Dholavira lies at the far end of the Road to Heaven. From Bhuj it is a long drive, so most visitors stay nearby rather than doing it as a day trip. Road to Heaven Resort is about 31 km away: explore Dholavira in the morning, return for lunch and rest, and drive the Road to Heaven at sunset.
Our luxury AC tents include breakfast and dinner, and our team can help arrange a cab for the day. Send an enquiry to check availability.
