Road to Heaven, Kutch: The Complete Travel Guide

Few drives in India feel as unreal as the Road to Heaven. A narrow ribbon of tarmac runs straight across the Great Rann of Kutch, with shallow water, salt crust and sky on every side. Here is everything you need to plan your visit — from the best time to go to where to stay right beside it.
What is the Road to Heaven?
The Road to Heaven is a stretch of road of roughly 30 km that crosses the Great Rann of Kutch between Khavda and Dholavira in Gujarat. Because it runs through the open salt desert, the views change with the seasons: after the monsoon you see water and reflections on both sides; through winter the salt dries into a dazzling white crust.
It has become one of the most photographed places in Kutch, and for good reason. At sunrise and sunset the whole landscape turns pink and gold, and on clear nights the sky is full of stars.
Best time to visit
- October to March is the best season. Days are pleasant, nights are cool and the salt desert is at its most beautiful. This is also Rann Utsav season.
- Sunrise and sunset are the magic hours for photography. Midday light is harsh and the heat can build even in winter.
- Full-moon nights make the white desert glow, while moonless nights are best for stargazing.
- Summer (April–June) is very hot, and in the monsoon some parts of the Rann can be waterlogged.
How to reach
The nearest airport and railway station are in Bhuj. From Bhuj, the drive north towards Khavda takes you into the Rann; from Khavda the Road to Heaven continues towards Dholavira. Most travellers come by car or taxi — there is very little public transport on this route.
The simplest way to experience the road properly is to stay nearby. Road to Heaven Resort is right beside the road, so you can drive out for sunrise, return for breakfast and go back for sunset without long transfers.
Tips for the drive
- Fuel up and carry water and snacks. There are no shops or fuel stations along the stretch.
- Park safely. If you stop for photos, pull fully off the road and watch for vehicles — it is a working road.
- Carry sun protection. Sunglasses, a hat and sunscreen are a must; the white salt reflects a lot of light.
- Keep ID handy. This is a border region and you may be asked for identification at checkpoints.
- Check before flying a drone. Drone use can be restricted in border areas, so confirm the latest rules first.
- Leave no trace. The Rann is a fragile ecosystem — please take your rubbish back with you.
Combine it with nearby sights
The Road to Heaven fits naturally into a 2–3 day Kutch itinerary. From the resort you can visit Dholavira, the UNESCO-listed Harappan city (about 31 km), drive up Kala Dungar for the best view over the Great Rann (about 30 km) and continue to the White Rann and Rann Utsav at Dhordo (about 50 km). See all distances on our attractions page.
